Robert Stanley “Bobby” Whitlock is an American singer, songwriter, and musician who was born on March 18, 1948 in Memphis, Tennessee. In 1970–71, he was a member of the blues-rock band Derek and the Dominos alongside Eric Clapton. Before joining Delaney & Bonnie and Friends in 1968, Whitlock worked with Memphis soul groups including Sam & Dave and Booker T. & the MG’s. Whitlock’s friendship with Delaney & Bonnie bandmate Clapton led to his joining George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass triple album sessions in London in 1970, and the creation of Derek and the Dominos later that year. Whitlock composed or co-authored a number of songs for the band’s only studio album, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs (1970), including “Tell the Truth,” “Anyday,” and “Why Does Love Have to Be So Sad?” During the 1970s, Whitlock released four solo albums, including Bobby Whitlock and Raw Velvet (both 1972), as well as contributing to recordings by Clapton, John Lennon, Dr. John, and the Rolling Stones. He subsequently took a break from music until 1999, when he released It’s About Time. Whitlock has recorded and performed with his wife, CoCo Carmel, and other artists located in Austin, Texas, since his return.
