FIRST PHOTO: Krystel Valoroso, 16, of the 4-H Country Buckaroos walks her 1313-pound steer Mooshu around the auction ring as bidders answer the call of Big Island auctioneer Richard Kaniho during Saturday’s Maui AgFest and 4-H Livestock Fair at War Memorial Complex. Valoroso ended up receiving $7 a pound for the 18-month-old Charolais/Angus steer she has been raising since Dec. 31, 2022. Over 154 days, the steer gained 615 pounds under her care, a daily average of 3.99 pounds. This is Valoroso’s eighth year in 4-H.

Jaunita and husband Bobby Pahia own the taro farm, while Reyes serves as Communication Coordinator. Reyes said Maui is in desperate need of infrastructure that will allow farmers to sell the food they grow.
